A specific activity area of the company is concerned with the use of numerical models to solve problems related to the movement of subsurface fluids, both for the engineering and environmental aspects. The activity deals with geo-mechanics processes related to gas/oil production, deposit studies and study and analysis of subsidence.
Connected to this, another important area of application is the numerical investigation on the hydrodynamic effects of hydrocarbon production in surrounding aquifers.

Typical application fields:

Subsurface flow modeling: unconfined/confined aquifers; regional multiaquifer systems; effects of multi-layered wells; design of well fields; determination of well capture zones; definition of the influence of pumping rates on base-flow aquifer regime; evaluation of water residence time; aquifer storage and recovery projects; dam/embankment seepage; beach dewatering effects; interaction between gas/oil reservoirs and surrounding waterdrives.
Geomechanical modeling: land subsidence induced by groundwater pluming; land subsidence due to the development of gas/oil reservoirs; local-scale consolidation process induced by dewatering and external loads; natural layer compaction; well failure; stress/strain analyses; faults dynamics.

Modelling studies are carried out by state of the art three-dimensional finite element codes developed by the University of Padua (Italy) and engineered by MED INGEGNERIA (MED-SUBS, MED-COUP, MED-FAULT).
