WESTERN BASIN OF THE PORT OF TARANTO
Location/Country: Taranto (TA), Italy
Client: Progetti e Ambiente S.p.a.
Dates: 2005/2006
MED INGEGNERIA during 2005-2006, completed the detail design for the expansion of the IV pier and the realization of the western basin of the port of Taranto, within the more complex project of the realization of the logistic platform.
The project regards a complex hydraulic analytical study of the harbor area, in order to identify the technical solution for the construction of a new berth quay for container ships, through the enlargement of the existing pier. Moreover the project considers the reshaping of the technical dock used by the Port Authority, designing a new location for the Fire Department and the Police Department ships, a new roads system over the quay, the construction of a storage and distribution area with suitable sheds for the management of the goods (refrigerated warehouse).
The project comprehends also the construction of a linking road system, which connects and regulates the traffic between the existing road network and the new logistic area (located at 6 km of distance, including a viaduct, six bridges and all the facilities) paying attention to the traffic distribution and the practicability from and towards the port, without interfering with the usual urban traffic. The solution is supported by the marine-meteorological study of the extreme wave motion and the forces that act on the new projected structures.
The project was based on the analysis of the infrastructures and the logistic conditions of the Port of Taranto, searching for and verifying the optimal solution for the traffic problems that cause significant consequences on the urban areas conditions. The most advantageous solution concerns the construction of a new connection system that diverts the goods transportation away from the historical center of the city of Taranto (about 500,000 inhabitants).
